GENEVA – Protection services are seriously defective for refugees and migrants making dangerous journeys from the Sahel and the Horn of Africa towards North Africa and Europe, including survivors of man trafficking, UNHCR, the United nations refugee agency, warned today.
In a report released today, ahead of Earth Anti-Trafficking 24-hour interval, UNHCR mapped protection services available to asylum seekers, refugees and migrants as they travel along these routes.
Some victims are left to die in the desert, others are subjected to repeated sexual and gender-based violence, kidnapping for ransom, torture and many forms of physical and psychological abuse.
The report is the 2d of its kind and highlights the gaps in available protection services, particularly in terms of protection, access to justice, identification of survivors and provision of responses to gender-based violence, homo trafficking and for unaccompanied and separated children. It includes 1
2 countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cote d'ivoire, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Somalia and Sudan.
"I am appalled by the abuses that refugees and migrants face as they travel through the Sahel and the East and Horn of Africa towards North Africa, and sometimes on to Europe," said UNHCR'southward Special Envoy for the Central and Western Mediterranean, Vincent Cochetel. "Too many lives have been lost or broken on these roads."
Cochetel stressed the urgent need for more funding to implement ameliorate services to preclude trafficking, identify and support survivors, ensure admission to aviary for victims and those at risk of trafficking in need of international protection, and bring perpetrators to justice.
He as well cited the need for States, UN agencies, civil society and non-governmental organizations to redouble efforts to implement existing international frameworks such equally the Un Palermo Protocol on Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling every bit the best collective way to save lives and fight these crimes.

Information technology is currently but 30% funded.

Globally, UNHCR works with several UN agencies, notably IOM and UNODC, every bit well as regional and national partners, to develop initiatives to address man trafficking.
